Racism or Prejudice?

If a gang of black people beat of a white kid for his race, some people would just call that prejudice.  Racism in our society works both ways.  Prejudice is the dislike of a race, racism is doing something about it.

Racism has a lot of definitions, kid.

The one you keep resorting to?  The dictionary definition?  It ignores the history and pervasiveness of race as a social construct, and laws, regulations and cultural mores that have employed ‘race’ in assigning arbitrary hierarchies according to skin colour and cultural allegiance.

My favourite definition of racism can be split in three ways:

1. Institutional racism.  Legislated racism.  South African Apartheid.  Canada’s Indian Act.  The Chinese Head Tax.  Jim Crow.  Racial profiling is institutional racism.  The targeting families of colour by social services, putting more of our kids in the system, per capita, than white kids.  Arizona’s laws regarding Latin@ people, or “Walking While Brown,” are all more examples of institutional racism. Institutional racism is racism on a societal level that is designed to reinforce the primacy of whites at the expense of people of colour.  It is a system.  In America, in Canada and throughout the West, only white people benefit from systemic racism. 
2. Internalized racism.  This is when Morgan Freeman said that we shouldn’t talk about racism.  This is my grandfather refusing to speak his indigenous language because the priests beat it out of him.  This is the tacit acceptance by people of colour of racist jokes being made at our expense.  Internalized racism is the acceptance of our place at the bottom of the racial hierarchy.
3. Personally mediated racism.  Personally mediated racism is, simply put, an interpersonal interaction informed by prejudice which is in turn justified by social mores, legal framework, public attitudes and stereotypes.  

Now you, in all your white wisdom, in your pontificating, you have basically adopted the third definition as the source of your imagined victimization.  

However, that’s a load of shit because you’re willfully ignoring two things:

• History
• Context

Now, I recognize that you’re a genius sociology major and you know everything about anything, but you should probably do well to remember that social interactions are informed by both.  

I’ll be brief.

This is the history:

White people institutionalized race.  It’s a philosophical construct that has no basis in culture of biology, it is simply an assignation of social position according to skin colour.  Since Europeans were mostly white and at the advent of colonialism, they had every reason to develop philosophies, laws and attitudes which would help keep them at the top of the pile and all those pesky coloured folks at the bottom.

This construct was and is reinforced by stereotyping, by the media (and fuck what you think, the media is by-and-for white people, and only a myopic white broheim would deny it) and by religion.  Dum Diversas was a famous papa bull that legitimized Christian slavery, so long as the slaves weren’t white.

This is the context:

A centuries long tradition like that doesn’t go away because of a civil-rights movement, and just over half of America voted for Obama.  That shit has deep, deep roots and all instances of personally-mediated racism are informed by the template the white man set, using the white man’s tropes and the white man’s stereotypes.

Further, there are no stereotypes that remove, erase or deny the agency and legitimacy of whiteness.  There are no slurs against whiteness that reinforce a history of white oppression, because that history doesn’t exist.  This is because the construct of whiteness was set up with you in mind.

When someone’s being rude to you because you’re a white kid?  That’s backlash, and it isn’t even a taste of what People of Colour have had to experience throughout history and into the present  Your willful denial of this fact is a sure sign of your inability to betray your obvious privilege.

But in addition to any problem white people face, people of color must also bear the burden of dealing with an entire social, cultural, political, economic climate that works against us each and every single day.

And here’s the thing about the effect of racism on PoC’s everyday lives: it’s not like adding one more little thing. This isn’t simple math. Racism isn’t just a “minus 1” on our radar. It informs, guides, and shapes the way every other problem is handled.
Think about it. When white people are pulled over by the cops, their biggest fear is jail time. When black people are pulled over by the cops, our biggest fear is that they’ll kill us and we won’t even get 30 seconds on the 5:00 news.

And for the record: I did see an analysis of the famous Wednesday Adams’s speech by a Native American floating around on here and they pointed out that the symbol on the head band isn’t accurate for ANY tribes from the Northeast, and based on that symbol, the tribe they would be from wouldnt have scalped anyone.   Did anyone else see and possibly have a link to it floating around their computer or tumblr?

I feel it’s also important to point out that nowhere in this post does the author give any reasoning for their opinion, nor do they cite any specific incidents or studies that back up their point. geez. the point being made with the previous posts regarding this image is that the women participating in slutwalk need to examine the privilege they have in being white and identifying as sluts, a word that means different things to different ethnicities of people, and in different cultures. They also need to examine the purpose and privilege in being naked/less-than-fully-clothed in public and expressing sexuality. Hell, even protesting on the street with relatively little police harassment is a privilege only afforded to white people.

These are things that historically have been used to oppress all women but have also been used to oppress queer women and women of color even more. I do not doubt that the people participating in SlutWalk have the best of intentions, but the way they are going about protesting rape culture and a slut-shaming culture is far from inclusive.

I think the only knee-jerk reaction I’m seeing here is one by eastcoastliberalelite. A minority has told you the problems they are facing and the best you can do is say “shut the fuck up”?. You clearly are a perfect example of unexamined privilege, ECLE.

That’s a sucky analogy. I guess it’s supporting affirmative action? Look, the people still riding the success their ancestors had during the slavery period (they’re ever thinning) would have an advantage whether we had affirmative action or not. Affirmative action targets the borderline applicants to colleges and jobs…and favors minorities. Those with the unfair step aren’t borderline. The applicants are on equal ground and do have equal opportunity. Yet the minority gets preference. Still reverse discrimination.

Uhhhhhhhh… white people are riding on the privilege left over from slavery and extreme racism.

Affirmative action seeks to even out the playing field: because of racist and impacts still felt from racist laws, racial minorities are often in lower socioeconomic groups than white people. Being in a lower socioeconomic group often means living in worse neighborhoods and going to worse schools. Racial inequalities are not over, and denying their existence will only perpetuate their existence. 

 No offense. But I’m more or a minority in todays society than most african americans and women. Because I’m a 20-something white male I get passed over for jobs sometimes based solely on my skin color because of affirmative action. Now obviously there’s still parts of the world out there where these minorities are still on bottom but those are few and far between. I mean come the fuck on. We’ve got an african american president. So I think it’s time to drop the whole woe is me thing. Not to mention Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcom X would roll over in there graves if they saw the way most african americans acted. Yeah, you can blame that partly on the educational system in lower income areas. But I don’t see many rappers spreading there wealth around to help inner-city african americans realize there true potential. Instead they spew shit about bitches and hoes and making that green. It’s no surpirse why most inner-city african americans act they way they act. Look at the people they idolize.

Do you know who Native Hawaiians are? They are the poorest, most worse off ethnic group in the United States because when the U.S. stole, yes, STOLE the Hawaiian islands (Hawaii was a sovereign independent country) they were populated by Hawaiian Natives who were all killed off and/or stripped of their land, culture and language. Only in the 70’s were they able to reclaim whatever bits of their culture they managed to retain in secret but not before AMERICANS reduced it to Tiki culture and kitchsy exotic artifacts.

To this day these people are suffering with no end in sight and NO help at all. Most are homeless! Everything was taken from them and along came WWII and all the racist douchefucks decided to make Native Hawaiians sacred Tiki Gods just cute little souvenir relics. They created 34058948756 Hawaiian pin ups of which all were white women.

And now Pin Up culture continues to usurp Native Hawaiian dress, Gods and general aesthetics shamelessly. Grass skirts, leis, Hula, Tiki Gods, their bright floral prints, etc. They have been reduced to just that….As if they arent real, valuable, horribly oppressed people with a rich language, culture and customs. Its a slap in the face from the same careless white people who didnt give a fuck about them and left them dying and on the streets without anything.

Everywhere you look Asians are claiming to be “Hawaiian” and everytime you look up a photo of  Hawaiian you are liable to find nothing but tan asian people and not one single Native Hawaiian. Basically asians immigrants to Hawaii have also appropriated Hawaiian culture and identities and are now even perpetrating as something they arent and further obfuscating Hawaiians plight.

Everytime some douchefuck with no Native Hawaiian ancestry (or 1/16th of it) who happened to be born in Hawaii insists on being called Hawaiian it is SPIT in the face of REAL Native Hawaiians. Hawaiian is an ethnicity, a nationality, a culture. Either you are born one or you arent. Being born in a Sioux reservation wouldnt make you Sioux by birth, either.

And no Samoans arent the Natives of Hawaii! Native Hawaiians are Hawaiis natives. Samoans are the natives of *gasp* SAMOA!!!!! Right race, wrong nationality. Hawaiians are polynesian and do look alot like Samoans, the Maori and Tahitians, who, not surprisingly have also been raped and pillaged by white colonizers. However they DONT look at all asian unless they are mixed with them. Get a fuckin clue, people.

Some are still even ignant enough to try to argue Native Hawaiians dont exist because thats like calling yourself Californian. Yeah, if California was a sovereign country before maybe there’d be a comparison, assholes. How do you just erase an entire ethnic group like that?

There are less than 3000 Native Hawaiians left at this point. I am sure in just one generation when they are finally dead and gone the U.S. will suddenly recognize them and give them useless scraps.
